Function description
For our project team based at our client’s location in Hamburg (Germany) KH Engineering is looking for an experienced Lead Engineer Instrumentation within the Instrumentation & Proces Control discipline.

Our client will be geared towards the future of complex metallurgy through the implementation of project(s). As part of the client’s organization, the Lead Engineer guides all aspects within your own discipline and within the different subprojects. You will be responsible for setting up the discipline standard and provide technical guidance to the subcontractors. As a Lead Engineer you will work closely together with and report to the Engineering Manager of the site. You will be responsible for assuring compliance of the contractors to the client’s requirements. During construction, the Lead Engineer will take part as Construction Supervisor and function as part of the field engineering team. You will need to support the Site Engineering Manager in his or her supporting role for the Commissioning Manager.

For example, in a certain subproject, the following tasks need to be addressed:

  • - Set the standards within the own discipline for the project;
  • - Coordinate a general kick-off meeting with all the discipline leads of the different subcontractors;
  • - Review subcontractor requirements and ensure that as built documentation for the project is available and communicated;
  • - Review and comment Contractor and subcontractor input to ensure their planned activities meet project and contractual requirements;
  • - Monitor and report progress within the own discipline, notifying any predicted shortfall or discrepancies against timescale and budgets;
  • - Being focal point for all questions concerning your discipline;
  • - Coordinate project execution with client’s team leaders and specialists in several site locations;
  • - Define relevant milestones and directly mitigate deviations;
  • - Provide accurate and relevant information as required by the project;
  • - Establish and maintain smooth communication and a solid and productive relationship with the stakeholders through regular reporting, meetings and appropriate follow-up;
  • - Provide diligent internal reports on project status;
  • - Being accountable for relevant schedule and relevant budget;
  • - Participate in all relevant process safety and HAZOP activities;
  • - Develop cost estimate for discipline Instrumentation Engineering;
  • - Usage of preventive claims management technique;
  • - Evaluation of scope changes (reasons, schedule and financial impact);
  • - Experience exchange within the main project, other projects and Site owner;
  • - Staffing and coordination of all Instrumentation Engineers;
  • - Lead all necessary (Factory) Acceptance Tests together with Equipment Lead;
  • - Attendance and controlling for all detail engineering and commissioning issues by contractor related to instrumentation engineering;
  • - Owner of Instrumentation portion of 3D model.

KPI’s for the role are:

  • - Discipline quality and technical performance without technical problems;
  • - Schedule (Milestones);
  • - Flawless commissioning and start-up of the discipline related topics.

Function demands

  • - You have a completed education with a degree on the Higher Professional Education (HBO / HTS) or University (WO / TU) level, preferably in Electrical / Instrumentation / Proces Control Engineering;
  • - You have at least 10 years of experience with high budget projects experience. Having participated in the full life cycle of complex process technology projects is a benefit;
  • - A good track record of accomplishments in previous comparable projects;
  • - You have proven problem solving skills and the ability and willingness to handle periodic peak demands;
  • - You are able to demonstrate leadership towards subcontractors and have a talent to provide direction, motivation and insights to the contractors discipline leads;
  • - You have a willingness to travel to several locations (on occasion only);
  • - You are able to communicate very well in English, German and Dutch languages (writing, reading and speaking);
  • - You have a valid Safety for Operations Supervisors (VCA VOL) certificate or you are willing to renew this or acquire this if necessary.
